History

The Gorner Gorge - Unique natural beauty

The path through the Gorner Gorge was built in the years
1886/87 by the brothers Josef and Elias Lauber as well as the brothers
Josef and Gabriel Taugwalder.

This right of way was granted to them by the Zermatt burgher community
have resigned. In return, they had to pay the entire community
to a "Kolaz" (snack). Interesting in this
the fact that already one year before, the company had already
corresponding request from a Frenchman named
Charpentier had reached the burgher community. He also wanted to
create a run at his own expense and return the system to 10
years of the burgher community. But his request was made by
of the burgher community.

The construction of the Gorner Gorge was based on a nature-orientated guided tour with
natural materials found in the region. On
blasting, tunnels, etc. were deliberately avoided.
The guest can therefore enjoy an unadulterated natural beauty today.
discover what is rare for publicly accessible canyons, this
all the more so as the passage is already more than 120 years old.
The construction was carried out with the simplest tools and a special
propulsion system. Until around the middle of the last century, the way was
divided by the gorge into a front and a rear part.
